First Year Academic Convocation

Jeannette Walls grew up in poverty and went on to have a successful career as a magazine and television reporter. Her The Glass Castle: A Memoir (Scribner, 2005), in which she describes her “dysfunctional, nomadic and occasionally homeless childhood,” was a New York Times best seller and a 2006 Alex Awards winner. In her speech at the First Year Academic Convocation, she encourages Boston College freshmen to face the truth, no matter how unpleasant, and to “never stop dreaming and never stop learning.” President William P. Leahy, SJ, welcomes the Class of 2011 and introduces Walls.
