Daniel Vasella, MD, chairman and CEO of Novartis International AG, has headed the company since its creation in 1996. Based in Switzerland, Novartis is the world's sixth largest pharmaceutical company. In his tenure as CEO, Vasella has strengthened the company's research capabilities, moved its research center to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and established the Genomic Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation. In 2004, he was named the Financial Times's “most influential European businessman of the past quarter century.” He discusses some of the factors currently determining prescription drug costs, including government regulation and patent protection.
