Reading from Reasonable People

In this Lowell Humanities Series lecture, Grinnell College associate professor of English Ralph James Savarese reads from his book Reasonable People: A Memoir of Autism and Adoption: On the Meaning of Family and the Politics of Neurological Difference (Other Press, 2007). “As a novel this would be unbelievable,” Savarese observes in describing the complex and horrific details that form the background of his story. He recounts adopting a boy with autism who had been physically and sexually abused as a young child and separated from his beloved sister. Despite expert opinions that the boy was “profoundly retarded,” he successfully made the “long, slow march toward literacy,” using a computer to express his thoughts.
