The Septuagint Translation of the Bible: Between Jews and Christians

Tessa Rajak, Horace W. Goldsmith Visiting Professor in Judaic Studies and Classics at Yale University, discusses the Septuagint, the Hebrew Bible’s earliest extant translation, compiled from numerous Greek translations made by Hellenistic Jews. She presents her conclusions regarding how the Jews’ world outlook and Jewish-Christian relations during the first 200 years of the Common Era shaped the “huge number” of Greek translations, which eventually became the Septuagint, the basis of later Christian Bibles. A question-and-answer period follows the lecture.
