Length: 55 minutes

Richard Pineda of the University of Texas at El Paso Communications Department discusses the controversy over immigration policy, focusing on how language used by politicians and interest groups shapes the policy debate. “As a rhetorician, I’m interested in the way that language motivates people, and in particular, I’m interested in the way that presidential rhetoric and presidential communication frame the discussion for policy in the United States.” Using the immigration debate as an example, he suggests that a chief executive’s statements “not only synthesize the values of the country at a given time, but they also motivate people to move down that values spectrum.”
