First Year Academic Convocation

Journalist and author J.R. Moehringer is the featured speaker at Boston College’s fifth annual academic convocation for first-year students. He recalls his modest upbringing, in which he was raised by a single mother and mentored by an uncle who owned the corner bar, and offers students nine pieces of advice on how to make the most of their college years. (Number 6: Dedicate your time in college to someone who couldn't go.)
Moehringer, a former national correspondent for The Los Angeles Times, is the author of The Tender Bar, a New York Times bestselling memoir published by Hyperion Books in 2006. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing in 2000.
