Thomas McCarthy ’88 returned to Boston College to receive the 2008 Arts Council Alumni Award for Distinguished Achievement, presented to him by President William P. Leahy, SJ, at an event capping the University’s annual spring Arts Festival. In this wide-ranging interview, conducted during the festival by the theater department’s Luke Jorgensen ’91, McCarthy recalls his student days at Boston College and discusses his career as an actor, film writer, and director. In addition to numerous acting credits in movies and television, McCarthy wrote and directed the 2003 movie The Station Agent, which won three awards at the Sundance Film Festival. His latest film, The Visitor, about a man who finds a pair of illegal immigrants living in his New York City apartment, has been praised by Salon.com, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times, which designated the film a “critic’s pick.”
