“If you want to be a cartoonist, you can quit school right now,” says New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff at the beginning of his talk, sponsored by the Lowell Humanities Series. He discusses the different sorts of humor in New Yorker cartoons, the work culture at the magazine (including the difference between writers and cartoonists), and the importance of humor in life. In addition to several anthologies of cartoons from the New Yorker, Mankoff is the author of The Naked Cartoonist: A New Way to Enhance Your Creativity (Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers, 2002).
