The Charms and Limits of Secularization: A Reflection on the Religious Situation of the West

In this program, part of the Bradley Lecture in Political Philosophy series, Pierre Manent suggests that Western societies must resolve a paradox when they define themselves as secular while maintaining that religion is at the center of self-understanding. An eminent political philosopher, Manent is on the faculty of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Socials in Paris and comes to Boston College each fall to teach courses in political science. His books on philosophy and modern European politics include Democracy Without Nations: The Fate of Self-Government in Europe (Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2007).
