Format: Panel Discussion followed by Q&A

Length: 76 minutes

The fifth annual Lynch School Symposium on Educational Excellence and Equity assesses the progress made toward equal education—what one speaker calls an “elusive goal”—exactly half-a-century after the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that “separate but equal” was unconstitutional and that schools should be desegregated “with all deliberate speed.” The panel includes Roger Harris, Ph.D.'98, headmaster of the Boston Renaissance Charter School, and Jean McGuire, executive director of the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO). This is the final event of the University's series of programs regarding Brown v. Board of Education.

The event begins with an update by Dean Joseph O'Keefe, SJ, on the state of the Lynch School of Education. The panel is introduced by associate dean John Cawthorne, and James Unis '06, one of the cofounders of the student group Faces, which aims to foster awareness and dialogue on campus about issue of race.
