In this program, sponsored by the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry, Marco Impagliazzo presents historical and theological perspectives on the relationship between the Church and the poor, using as his point of departure a quotation of Pope John XXIII, “The Church presents herself as what she is and what she wants to be, a Church of all, and particularly a Church of the poor.” Impagliazzo is international president of the Community of Sant’Egidio, a lay association with 50,000 members in more than 70 countries, devoted to providing aid to the poor and promoting peace. Following his remarks, Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley offers a brief response.
