Jeremy Grantham (left), cofounder of GMO, a global investment management firm, speaks on the current valuation of stocks around the world and—citing rising inflation and interest rates, a housing market bubble, and escalating energy prices—finds the market weak.

Utpal Bhattacharya (right), professor of finance at Indiana University, follows with a presentation of a paper assessing the current state of stock-picking worldwide. In almost every market, the volume of stock-picking has declined, replaced by indexing.

This panel was taped at the 2006 Center for Asset Management Conference, held at the State Street Pavilion in Fenway Park. The conference attracted some 140 academics and finance-sector managers.
