Martin Espada is an English professor at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he teaches creative writing. He reads from two of his poetry collections, including his latest book, The Republic of Poetry (Norton, 2006). A winner of the American Book Award and one of North America’s best-known Latino poets, Espada has written six books of poetry that reflect his Puerto Rican heritage and love of music. He defines “republic of poetry” as “a state of mind where creativity meets community.”
