Novelist Anne Enright opens her talk by expressing ambivalence about being characterized as an Irish writer and as a woman writer. “I'm only a woman on Tuesdays,” she quips. “The rest of the week I can't be bothered.” She reads several passages about “issues of identity” from What Are You Like? (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2000), a story about twins separated at birth. On October 16, 2007, Enright's recent novel The Gathering (Grove Press, 2007) was awarded the Man Booker Prize, a prestigious recognition, awarded annually for a novel written in English by a citizen of the British Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland. Following the reading, Enright answers audience questions.
