Writers Among Us: Clare Dunsford, Reading from Spelling Love with an X

Clare Dunsford, associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, reads from and discusses her literary memoir Spelling Love with an X: A Mother, a Son, and the Gene that Binds Them (Beacon Press, 2007), about her experiences raising a son with the inherited mental disability fragile X syndrome. Dunsford’s book, which she characterizes as “a project of the heart and the head,” has been in the works for 10 years. It describes not only her son’s life with a mental disability, but her own journey in coming to grips with being the carrier of a defective gene and its implications for her child.
