Michael Dukakis on Health Care Reform

Former Massachusetts governor and 1988 Democratic nominee for president Michael Dukakis doesn't mince words in talking about health care reform. “The market doesn't work when it comes to health care,” he declares. “It never has and it never will.” He calls for government-regulated universal health care—something, he says, that was initially advocated by Theodore Roosevelt in 1912. Dukakis, a professor of political science at Northeastern University and a visiting professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, devotes his talk, sponsored by the Connell School of Nursing, to articulating his case and discussing the political difficulties in achieving universal health care.
