Length: 80 minutes

John Bishop, associate professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley, specializes in the work of James Joyce. His Joyce's Book of the Dark (University of Wisconsin, 1986) has been called the definitive work on Joyce's famously difficult Finnegans Wake. As part of the Lowell Humanities Series, Bishop reads aloud and explicates select passages of the novel, suggesting methods for delving below the literal surface of the text.

Bishop is introduced by Patrick Moran, a doctoral candidate in Boston College's English department.
