A Commitment to Life: The Church's Position on Abortion
Helen Alvaré is an associate professor at the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. She worked for several years for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' pro-life office as its director of information and planning, and has served as an official spokesperson for the Church on abortion issues. Her presentation explicates the Church's position on abortion and the ways its arguments contradict emergent trends in American family life and sexual practices. She also relates the collateral effects of abortion as she has observed them in her interviews with women who have had them, and through her background in the areas of family law and reproductive technologies.
Alvaré is introduced by Thomas Groome, a Boston College theology professor and the director of the Institute for Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College.
