Iraqi Women: Untold Stories from 1948 to the Present

When asked by a publisher to write a book about the effect of the U.S. occupation on Iraqi women, Nadje Al-Ali says she wanted to provide a more nuanced picture than the stereotype of “just another Muslim country oppressing its women.” In her most recent book, Iraqi Women: Untold Stories from 1948 to the Present (Zed Publishers, 2007), Al-Ali discusses the role of women in Iraqi society from postcolonial independence to the present day, focusing on the stories of individual women. Of German and Iraqi descent, Al-Ali is a senior lecturer in social anthropology at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter in Britain and a lecturer on gender studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
